The Laban for Animators™ Program is a progressive learning experience that combines structured instruction with animation practice and personalized feedback. Through self-paced Modules, Coaching, and Community Critiques, you'll integrate movement knowledge into your animation process while developing your observation, analysis, and animation skills.
Module 1: Foundations
Foundations introduces the core concepts of Laban Movement Analysis through short, focused lessons designed specifically for animators. Each lesson combines theory with practical application, helping you build movement knowledge that you can immediately apply to your own work.
Module 1 includes three core lessons:
Overview — Introduces the principles, themes, and movement categories of Laban Movement Analysis, providing a map of the system before exploring its individual components.
Phrasing — Introduces movement phrases as meaningful sentences of action. Learn how phrasing provides the underlying architecture of key pose sequences and how intent is communicated through the stages of an action.
Weight — The essence of animation lives here! Explore the structure behind creating the illusion of weight, then discover how the mobilization of a character's weight communicates intent.
Each lesson includes practical assignments that encourage you to observe, analyze, and apply the concepts to an animation you're currently working on or to a new piece created specifically for the course.
The LFA Learning Cycle
Learn → Animate → Receive Feedback → Revise
In the LFA™ Program, you won't just watch the videos. You'll integrate movement knowledge into your animation process through observation, practice, and feedback.
After each lesson, you'll complete an assignment and apply the concepts to your own work. As your animation develops, you can join a Community Critique or schedule one-on-one Coaching to receive movement-focused feedback. After revising your work, return for another review to deepen your understanding before moving on.
That cycle of learning, application, feedback, revision, and confirmation forms the foundation of the Laban for Animators™ approach.
Community Critiques
Bring your work-in-progress to a small group review where you'll receive movement-focused feedback while learning from the work of other animators. Observing and discussing movement helps strengthen your understanding while supporting your ability to apply it in your own work.
One-on-One Coaching
Individual coaching sessions provide personalized guidance on your animation, helping you apply LMA concepts to your own creative challenges and deepen your understanding.
Looking Ahead
After completing Module 1, you'll be ready to continue through future modules covering the full Laban Movement Analysis framework. Together, the Modules, Community Critiques, and Coaching form a comprehensive curriculum designed to support your long-term development as an animator.
